HURRAY , CONGRATULATE ME,

Dear friends, semi friends, semi foes and foes
Please congratulate me because I have joined the elite class of people who have been pick pocketed, mugged or robbed in Milano.
The precision at which they picked my pocket, was amazing and reminded me of the 60's calcutta days.At the upper end of the escalator one chap dropped his ticket and bent down to pick it up. I kept on pushing him shouting " Move ...move...and in a fraction of a second I realized I was trapped by surrounding people. I tried to protect my purse, some one twisted my left thumb to free the back pocket and the purse was gone...
And the repeatation of the old act, 4 of them targeted one chap " That is the pickpocket , he has picked mine...and gave a chase and all of them vanished..
Well it was not Korea or japan, where you can show $s popping out off your pocket and no one will touch....So normally I carry 20 Euro and no purse...but on saturday I carried the purse to do some shopping for SOMEONE. Becuase if I shop I get the firing " why you have wasted money by buying these things?"..if I dont buy then also I get the firing " You did not get any thing for me, not even Channel 5?".
Over the years I have found out that getting a firing for bringing something is much better than not getting anything...that little hidden smile of appreciation is milion $ for me.
Jokes apart , it was quite traumatic, but luckliy there was not much money, I could block the lost credit card in 30 mins...But without the credit card , my trips to neighbouring towns like Florence, Venice, chinka terra ( refer to wonderful blog of Cool lassie) may not materilize.  One of the reasons for picking up the asignment in Milano was to go to Chinka terra...else I am elargic to crime prone countries, and would have gone to Korea , japan or singapore or middle east  ...anyway I thank God simply because things could have been worse, at least one of them had a gun.
When I narrated the incident to my collegues, every one laughed it out and narrated their harrowing experinece of getting mugged, pick pocketed..it was comforting !!!

See few photos here , taken just before being mugged and after

On My way to being pick pocketed

Milano centrale  ( Rail station 150 meters away from my appartment, they maintain their old architecture

Side view Milano centrale
The famous winged horse and the guy , in close up below, Milano centrale

At duomo
The famous Milano tram car. reminds me of Calcutta days, even I took a tram ride in Nov 09 when I was in calcutta
Where I stay, an old building with high ceiling, ,beautiful 1 bed room, drawing dining serviced apartment  inside.

Can you cook here? I can't but will soon...Thats why I am silent over cooking blog

Look at the smile, a typical "act normal" smile on a person, whose pocket has been just picked , 10 minutes back , Hey thats me SOMEONE'S SOMEONE

Dear Friends
Even if I am not being able to blog ,  I read all the postings , that is the only entertainment I have here...
Happy cooking  and happy pick pocketing ( your dear hubby's, like I do purse picking of SOMEONE)

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that your things got stolen! That sounds like a real plan those pickpocketers carried out though. Pickpocketing aside, I hope you are well. The photos of Milan look amazing! What a beautiful place. Do take care, hope to see you back blogging soon.

Ushnishda, I am sorry to hear that your trip to Italy has been marred by this pickpocketing incident. Also sorry to hear that you wont be able to travel to places you were hoping to..Please watch out for fake cops who pressure to hand-over passport and such and be on high alert while you are out and about. Muggers target old people, crowded areas and dark alleys. Just don't find yourself in the wrong spot at wrong time.

Photos looks awesome. Esp love the shot of duomo. Its gorgeous. Looking forward to your hearing about your pleasant experiences and cooking posts.

I hate pick pockets and they raise pressure. When I was travelling somewhere, I saw a man running and he was trying to snatch somebody's purse. But instead he got beaten up by surrounding people and the lady whose purse was almost stolen, beat him up with her high-heeled shoes! By thw way, nice pictures of Milano! Beautiful!

OMG...being pick pocketed in abroad is something horrible. I can imagine that. But i really appreciate the way you took it cool. I too have a story to share. Some years back , when we arrived at NY from another state, we had a similar embarasssing thing like this. At that moment I didnt have an extra credit card (blaming hubby for that even now), but some cash in hand. So we managed to get a motel room and pass the night....You know what, I didnt sleep till he got a replacement card and an add-on for me too:)
The very thought gives me nerves:)

Thanks for the encouraging comments Sir. Because of some pain in my arms (due to browsing..hi..hi) , I missed many posts.

Your trip photos are exclusively nice. waiting to see recipes from your new kitchen.

Good that you do shopping for your wife. I am sure I will also yell at Xav, if he shop for me or not. But if he has shopped for me I will reward him with his favorites else console me with my favorites..ha ..ha ..ha.

Dear Ushnish,

Wonderful reading, though sorry about the incident as it could be really un-nerving. Pics were, too, great. You look like Utsa, though not quite! I have heard a lot about you and your mastery in cooking Bengorissa food! I will leave it to my daughter-in-law to persue your recipes and let me have all the pleasure.

"The first reaction is, "i knew!". Not really. Accept my heartfelt condolences at your loss, s’il vous plaít.

Reminds me of a time, possibly 15 years ago in Roma, when my wife's video camera was almost snatched, using a very similar ruse. Guess these Romans are crazy, as ever.

i'm not signing this comment, and i expect you to know the identity.

Sorry to hear about the pick pocketing, i too have heard its not safe in italy and spain, back in swiss we had planned to visit Italy but since we were only a group of gals we werent sure if it wud be safe! The pictures have come out gorgeous!

Dear Ushnishda,

what a pity !!!! I'm so sorry for you, but it has become so common here in Europe, especially in the tourisitic areas in metros, trains & bus.. they keep informing aloud "be aware of pick pockets" !!

poor you !!!! even though you didn't loose too much money, it must be frustrating to know that someone has your personal affairs, especially if there is any of your beloved ones' like "someone"s photo or id card etc.. be alert the next time you visit places, I keep repeating to my husband too, no purses at the back pockets!!!
you take care!!!

Hello Ushnish da
I was recently in Kolkata , so I missed your last post. So sorry to hear about your being pick pocketed. This proves that such incidences can take place anywhere. Your Milan photos are simply great. . This time during my visit to Kolkata from Gariahat they have removed tram tracks so I missed them.
All the best for your continued journey.

Hope you are fine. Beware of pickpocketing. Enjoy your holidays. Awaiting for your new post.

Amrita said...

your attitude can be summed up in the following words...
"They can pick my pocket, but they cannot pick at my sense of humour...They can snatch my money but they cannot snatch away my smile!! The point is that even after the pickpocketing incident smile is still there...albeit a wee bit sheepish!! "
:)

I thoroughly enjoyed this armchair travel to Milano via your pictures. Thanks for sharing.
